Further Information: Merce Cunningham, John Cage, David Tudor and Robert Rauschenberg met during their time as students and teachers at Black Mountain College in North Carolina. This group of artists accompanying Merce Cunningham’s dance event jointly experimented with various practices combining theatre, dance, music, and abstract visual art. In 1952, the four artists performed Untitled Event or Theater Piece #1 at the college, thought to be the first happening in the history of art and which later influenced the evolution of the Fluxus movement.
