Lawrence Weiner, Galerie Konrad Fischer, Düsseldorf, 1969

Opening: April 10, 1969, 8 p.m.

Dimensions: 9.1 x 15 cm

Further Information: The exhibition at Konrad Fischer’s gallery was Lawrence Weiner’s first solo show in Europe. In March 1969, Weiner was in Switzerland to take part in the group show Live in Your Head: When Attitudes Become Form, curated by Harald Szeemann at Kunsthalle Bern. I was in the cafeteria talking to Michael Heizer when someone came up to me and said, ‘Hello, hello!’ He didn’t speak much English, but he spoke a little. ‘Would you like to do an exhibition with me?’ I said, ‘Who are you?’ And he said: ‘Konrad Fischer.’ I said yes. ‘Okay, after the show in Bern, come with me and we’ll set up at my place.’) In this interview Weiner further recalled that Joseph Beuys also attended the opening, along with his students.

Below is an invitation to an exhibition by Lawrence Weiner at Folker Skulima, held in Berlin in 1970. Like the invitation from 1969, this one similarly functions as an instruction for the artwork, which, as the card states, may be realized by the artist, by another person, or may not be realized at all. Each of these options, the card further explains, has the same value and corresponds to the intention of the artist. The owner of the work will decide upon the work’s future.
